То, что есть, бывает двух видов: сущность вещей (которая делится на 10 категорий) и понимание, сотворенное умом; в последнем смысле она не есть сущность. По Фоме Акинскому (De Ente et Ess.c.1): "Известно, что Аристотель в Y Книге "Метафизики" писал, что о том, что есть через себя самого, можно говорить в двух значениях: в соответствии с одним - оно делится на 10 видов, в соответствии с другим означает истину утверждений. Различие заключается в том, что во втором значении обо всем, относительно чего может быть сделано утвердительное суждение, можно сказать, что оно есть; в этом смысле, отсутствие и отрицание называются вещами, которые есть, поскольку мы о них утверждаем. Утверждение есть противоположность отрицанию, например, мы говорим, что слепота существует в глазе. В первом значении нельзя сказать, что нечто есть до тех пор, пока оно фактически не утверждено; таким образом, в первом случае слепота и вещи подобного рода не являются вещами, которые существуют. Имя сущности не выводится из того, что есть во втором значении, поскольку о некоторых вещах, которые не имеют сущности, говорят, что они существуют, как это выяснилось в случае с отсутствием; но сущность выводится из того, что есть в соответствии с первым значением, то, что есть (ens) является первым понятием мышления, следовательно, оно стоит над всеми категориями и является одной из трансценденталий.
